We Also Join To Make The World A Better Place.
My team and I had the privilege of working on a European Union project towards the end of 2019, an event that demonstrated a strong commitment to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, both in terms of internal policies and commitments with partners around the world.
The event took place at the Dangote Business School (Bayero University), in the Northern part of the country; Kano.
The goals were centered on making the world a better place by the year 2030 with improved quality of living.
Climate action, sustainable and renewable energy are among those goals.
These are problems that can be addressed with renewable energy if we embrace the concept as a country.
To this end, the EU has been at the forefront of efforts to promote the use of renewable energy as a major source of generating energy. It was the premise behind Nigeria’s proactive policies on renewable energy.
Nigeria has been seriously affected by the effects of climate change exacerbated by adverse environmental practices, most of which are the result of ignorance and lack of strict environmental policies. I was not surprised, because we all know it’s a statement of fact. There is also a lack of access to sustainable and renewable energy in the country.
Recognizing the threat posed by the energy sector to our environment and its greater contribution to climate change, our beloved country is committed to providing affordable and reliable electricity to all by 2030.
With cheaper electricity, economic activities will pick up in villages and rural communities, as small businesses will flourish, providing better incomes for the owners.
Health care facilities will function better and will be able to provide better and quality services.
In order to help achieve these objectives, the European Union has initiated several events aimed at raising awareness of the value of renewable energy sources; highlighting its various efforts to encourage environmental sustainability; and improving its ties with Nigeria. It is established that the energy sector, which is at best unreliable, is one of the challenges that affect the smooth running of businesses in the country.
On the other hand, with increased access to affordable renewable energy, companies will reduce operating costs to increase their profitability.
The event also focused on informing stakeholders and the general public on the negative impact of certain practices on our climate, highlighting initiatives that improve environmental sustainability and the renewable energy sector. Stakeholders from different sectors, including students, companies and the diplomatic community, participated.
Ambassador Ketil Karlsen, Head of the Delegation of the EU to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), highlighted the advantages of renewable energy and highlighted it as a viable solution to Nigeria’s electricity issue. According to him, renewable energy would not only provide clean and affordable energy, but would also improve the industrial sector and provide employment.
He said that tackling the problem of climate change is a collective effort and should not be left to the government alone.

Nigeria’s energy sector is also financed by the EU to the tune of € 165 million, with the goal of increasing access to more than 90 million Nigerians and business owners without access to energy. Children are our future and it is important to ensure that they are provided with an inspiring and healthy learning environment.
With solar energy, this will be achieved. The European Union will continue to fight well in the fight against climate change, to promote environmental sustainability and to promote better access to clean and affordable energy for all.
It is hoped that a modern, safer and more prosperous planet with cleaner and more sustainable environments will be possible by 2030, and we can be grateful that what was once our ideal vision has become our present reality. It was in essence, a wonderful experience that we had during our stay at the conference, doing what we love to doing best.
